Riserva Vendicari - Natural reserve in Noto

Nature

The Natural Reserve of Vendicari Wildlife Refuge was established in 1984 and extends between Noto and Marzamemi. The area is known for the presence of marshes that are home to thousands of birds migrating from Africa. Among the marshes, to remember Sichilli Marsh, Marsh Scirbia, Bush Pantano, Pantano Grande and Pantano Piccolo.

Vendicari also takes a historical and anthropological importance of the presence of various archaeological sites such as the Byzantine catacombs, the fortifications of the Citadel of Arab domination, and a medieval tower.

The Reserve has a wide variety of environments: the sandy coast, the rocky coast, the Mediterranean, the cultivated areas. Therefore, the different characteristics of the ecosystem of Vendicari Reserve, have favored multiple vegetation, the juniper, the tamarisk, the samphire.

Regarding the fauna, there are numerous species of birds that stop in the Reserve: waders, herons, storks, and flamingos. Among these birds, the "knight of Italy" stops in the reserve during its migration from the Sahara desert to the nesting grounds in northern Europe.
